"Sir, we wish to see Jesus" John 12:21

Rev. Dan Kreller

The Reverend Daniel W. Kreller

St. Bartholomews Church in Ho-Ho-Kus will soon be receiving resumes for their 10th priest in the more than 100 years of the church’s existence. Long time Rector Daniel Kreller retired after 33 years of ministering to the church’s parishioners. A search committee has already been formed charged with the duty of presenting the next Rector to the Vestry for approval when the right candidate has been found. Temporarily, an interim priest will serve the congregation.
Dan, as he was known to all the members of the congregation, was a vibrant force in all facets of the church’s life. During his tenure he established the church’s Memorial Garden with the help of the late parishioner George Clark, an architect and former Ridgewood mayor.  Parishioner’s ashes can be buried in the garden and church members often come to sit and reflect on the lives of their loved ones.

He also saw to the installation of the stain glass window over the altar with a gift from the estate of the late William Loverd, a former executive with Kidder-Peabody, presided over the church’s Centennial Anniversary which was celebrated at the Hermitage, helped relocate two refugee families with the church’s help, and invited the local AA Group to hold their daily meetings each weekday in the Church Parish Hall.

Reverend Kreller was a religious scholar, and over the years taught his parishioners about their ”Jewish Roots” and each Maundy Thursday preceding Easter, orchestrated a Sader Supper similar to Christ’s last supper which became a very popular event in the church’s life.

The church honored Reverend Kreller on June 25th, his last service, which was attended by the Bishop of the Newark Diocese, the Right Reverend Mark Beckwith, as well as former parishioners and current church members.  Following the 10 AM service a picnic was held on the church grounds where a purse was presented to Reverend Kreller by Warden Michael Gnerre and tributes were paid by church members to Dan. Those who spoke mentioned how they felt Reverend Kreller’s greatest strength was his compassion and love for parishioners as well as other area residents who were dealing with crises in their lives. As one parishioner noted, when my wife was hospitalized multiple times Dan was always right beside me at her bed praying for her recovery.

Search Committee members are the co-chairs, Ghada Harb and Toby Winiarski, Scott Wolff, David Gabrielle, Fred Bergamo, Stephen Goulet, Gail Fayerweather, Allen DeNiear, and E.William Smethhurst. They may be reached through the church’s e-mail: StBartsHHK@aol.com or by church telephone, 201-444-5025.
